You will learn about the impacts of tourism, different tourism markets, the industry sectors and their services, major tourism bodies, environmental issues, career opportunities, and the growing importance of e-business. You will also learn to correctly identify the various sources of information on the tourism industry.

The course will train you to update tourism industry knowledge, to monitor current issues of concern to the industry and share updated industry knowledge with clients and colleagues.

This course will introduce you to the world and terminology of Travel and Tourism. Ideal for those with no previous industry experience as this course outlines the background information and knowledge that industry employees usually take about a year to learn and absorb - all they need to know to apply for jobs and start that entry level position.

This course will give students the confidence to attend job interviews as they will understand the industry’s terminology, sectors, markets, inter-relationships.

After employment, you will find you have the skills and information required to “Develop and update your Tourism Industry knowledge”.

Detailed Curriculum

The course is divided into topics, each topic is broken into lessons (14) and Online Quizes (7). It is important to take each quiz as the questions reinforce the learning process and help you to remember the key learning points. You should complete the material within one month for maximum retention but you have access to the material for 3 months after registration at which time your access will expire. By this time you should have also completed the final assessment tasks.

What do I need

A genuine interest in the Travel and Tourism Industry. Good English skills and basic PC/ Keyboarding skills are required along with access to a computer with internet. A quiet and comfortable space for studying will also help.

Then you will need to set aside a certain amount of time per day or week to complete the courses. we advise students to do only one lesson at a time and then review any notes you have taken.   • What jobs can I do after I complete this course?

    Completing Introduction to Travel & Tourism is a great first step to landing a job in the Travel & Tourism Industry. The course will teach you about the Industry sectors, companies and their inter-relationships and help you decide where you want to work in this dynamic Industry.

    However, in addition to this course you usually need the practical skills so important in the industry. After completing Introduction to Travel & Tourism Industry, Hayton College recommends students complete a computerised reservations course to give you the “hands-on” GDS skills required in operations areas of the travel industry including: airline reservations, tour operator reservations, ticketing consolidators, travel agent / consultants.

    Why is there an assessment fee for a Statement of Attainment?

    Most students want to learn as much as they can about the industry in as short a time as possible. This 2 fee structure means they can take the knowledge based material follow this with the skills based courses and then take the final assessment (which must demonstrate that they can develop and update tourism industry knowledge) when they choose, usually after the skills based courses are completed when they have learned a great deal more about the industry.

    You'll learn about the Industry's sectors, companies and their inter-relationships, what the employees of the Industry's companies do each day and you'll get the answers to the many questions you may have about this dynamic industry.

    What equipment do I need to take this course?

    Hayton College courses are accessed from a computer using the internet. Minimum system requirements follow:

    Broadband internet connection, recommended is a Pentium 4 or higher computer with 256mb RAM (MACs are also OK), Monitor at 1024 x 768 resolution or higher, Internet Explorer 6.1 and higher or Firefox 1.5 and higher (Firefox 2.0+ recommended)

    Q: Will this course help me work out in which sectors of the industry I might like to work?

    :It will. You will understand the sectors, the companies, their functions, staff roles, required skills and much more.

    What happens after registration?

    You will receive an e-mail acknowledging your registration and will be contacted by the College with Log in details within 24 hours of registration. Please complete the Student Profile when you register as a receipt for the course fee will be sent to the address supplied on this document.

    What about the course assessment, how is that structured?

    Formative assessments take place throughout the course in the form of Online Quizes. It is a good idea to try to achieve 100% in each of these to demonstrate you have understood the content. The final assessment is in 2 parts: Part A is a knowledge based Question and Answer assessment completed online. Part B: is a research project in which you must demonstrate a broad understanding of the Tourism Industry, the skills and knowledge required to develop and update knowledge of the tourism industry including the role of the different industry sectors and the key legal and ethical issues of the industry. On successful completion of Part A you will be able to download a Certificate of Completion, if oyu want to be eligible for a Statement of Attainment there is a further assessment to complete and an assessment fee of 125.00 to pay.

    How will this course apply in the workplace?

    The knowledge you gain on this course underpins effective performance in all sectors of the industry. The ability to develop and update tourism industry knowledge is a key part of an employee's work in the industry and this course focuses on training students to be able to collect and interpret information relevant to their sectors of work and the wider industry as a whole.The final assessment will test this.

    What will I have at the end of the course?

    On successful completion of this Unit of Competency you will have the skills required to develop and update Tourism Industry knowledge and understand that you must continue to do so after starting work to remain current and up to date with industry events.

    What certificates will I get?

    On successful completion of the online assessment you may download a Certificate of Completion, for a Statement of Attainment you must demonstrate the skills and knowledge required. After being deemed "competent" you will receive a Statement of Attainment - this result will look great on your CV.

    What is a Statement of Attainment?

    A Statement of Attainment is a Certificate issued by a Registered Training Organisation or RTO under the AQF. It confirms that a candidate has demonstrated competence in the required knowledge and skills of the unit assessment. A Statement of Attainment lists the Units of Competence in which the candidate has been assessed as competent. Each Statement of Attainment earned by a candidate may contribute to a qualification outcome.

    What is an RTO?

    RTO means Registered Training Organisation. RTOs exist throughout Australia and are approved by state training authorities (such as the Northern Territory Department of Employment, Education and Training) to provide training and/or assessment services for VET qualifications.
